Gibril Stretch
Mr. Gibril Stretch was born in Sierra Leone, the capital of Freetown, in 1980. Born Gibrilla Gbla, Gibril altered his name upon embarking on a professional film industry career. At the age of four his father moved to the United States leaving him in his homeland to be raised by his aunt. At the age of six, he developed a speech impediment which caused him to constantly stutter when he spoke. Later in life he would say that it was the craft of acting that cured this as he discovered that when on stage and in front of the camera, words just seemed to flow from his soul.
Having always being teased for his stuttering, Gibril learned early on that
fighting his tormentors was a futile and potentially infinite struggle. So
instead of fighting his foes, he escaped to the sanctuaries of the movie theater
of his hometown. It was there that he found solace and his desire to be in film
was indelibly and irreversibly branded into his character. His first acting
role was at the age of 14 on stage in his hometown of Sierra Leone. After
finishing high school, he decided he belonged on the stage or screen and not in
a suburban Washington, D.C. classroom. So, he abandoned it all and moved to Los Angeles, California, to pursue the dream that was instilled in him on another
continent where he spent endless hours transformed by the magic of motion
pictures. This move has lead to a very promising career.
To date, Mr. Stretch has appeared in 7 short films and the critically acclaimed
stage production, Chicago Club Rumboogie, running periodically over the past
two years. He has a wealth of experience working on multiple film projects
behind the camera as grip, key grip, dolly grip, production assistant, and
gaffer. Mr. Stretch made his feature film debut in the motion picture,
Wigger, in which he portrayed an African outsider, Okonkwo. The role was
written expressly for him by the director as a tribute to the power of his
intellect and determination. This talented young man continues to strive to
make his mark in the film industry as not merely an actor but as unstoppable
force.
